Eduardo hails Arsenal fans for ‘fantastic’ reception
Eduardo says the rousing reception he received from Arsenal fans on Tuesday night made him feel like he still plays for the Premier League club.
The striker left Arsenal to join Shakhtar Donetsk in the summer and returned to Emirates Stadium for a Champions League fixture that Arsenal comfortably won 5-1. However, Eduardo scored the final goal of the night and despite seeing their side concede, Arsenal fans stood to applaud the striker and chant his name.
Memories of his sickening injury against Birmingham City in February 2008 are yet to fade and Eduardo clearly still has the sympathy of the Arsenal support. The Croatia international was certainly grateful for the reception afforded to him.
“It was great to come back here. It was unbelievable – it was like I still play for Arsenal,” Eduardo said. “They called my name and it was fantastic.”
Asked why he did not celebrate his goal, Eduardo explained: “I had a great time with many of the players and supporters and I had to respect that.”
